Crops' Microbiome in Qatar

Background:

Health is correlated to the equilibrium of our microbiome, mostly our gut microbiome. We get microbes from our environment, mostly from food. Therefore, the "Crops microbiome" research project, started in 2021, aims at exploring the microbiome in the food that we consume daily, vegetables. But more than that, we want to check the impact of the use of pesticide on the diversity of the microbes in crops and soil. We also want to check whether washing vegetables with water before eating impacts the abundance of microbes we consume with the crops. And we want to find out how is Qatar's newly developed agriculture is comparing to other countries in term of microbiome content.
Again, this is the first study that investigates on the microbiome of Qatar's agricultural products. Linked to the lifestyle Medicine project, which will tell us which vegetables people are consuming the most, how much and whether people eat organic or not, we are planing to come up with some new ideas on how to improve health by changing our lifestyle. The project is still ongoing.

Objectives:

1- Characterize the bacterial and fungal diversity of most consumed vegetables in Qatar.
2- Compare organic vs non organic vegetables
3- Compare Qatar vs imported vegetables
