Research Investigations
The aims of these investigations are to: 1/establish a ground for evidence-based research on the effects Arab Music Maqams on brain physiology and emotions; 2/ Understanding the brain correlates of human music performance, 3/ Raise awareness on the necessity of developing precision music therapy tools for individuals with middle eastern background.
Study 1: An EEG-based Exploration of the Variables Affecting Cortical Responses to Arabic Music Scales for a Personalised and Effective Music Therapy in the Middle East: a Clinical Study.
Trial number: NCT04573101
Study Type :Interventional (Clinical Trial)
Estimated Enrollment :100 participants
Allocation:Randomized
Intervention Model:Crossover Assignment
Intervention Model Description:Each participants is exposed to 24 different audio recordings and asked to select emotion that best describes feeling after each auditory stimulus. The 24 audio stimuli are distributed in a random manner by computer. In addition, emotional assessment is performed before and after the session. This is a total of 26 arms.
Masking:None (Open Label)
Primary Purpose:Basic Science
Official Title:An EEG-based Exploration of the Variables Affecting Cortical Responses to Arabic Music Scales for a Personalised and Effective Music Therapy in the Middle East: a Clinical Study
Actual Study Start Date :February 11, 2019
Estimated Primary Completion Date :December 31, 2022
Estimated Study Completion Date :December 31, 2023
This research project is a clinical trial, which I registered in the public database of the U.S National Library of Medicine, in October 2020. It aims at exploring the effect of arab maqams and arab music instruments (Oud, Ney and Qanun) on the brain and emotions in a multiethnic population like in Qatar. This is the first clinical trial registered on music for Qatar, it is also the first in the Gulf region and it is the only trial in the world that explores specific Maqams "Kurd" and "Saba" on three different instruments and using two different techniques, physiological and psychological assessment. Results awill be released in several publications. Clinical trial report not yet posted.
Background:
"Maqams", or to be fair to the arabic language "Maqamat", correspond to the melodic system used in all Middle Eastern Music and in prayers of muslims, christians or jewish of the Middle East. It is actually in the 10th century that El Farabi and others started using different Maqams to treat different diseases and develop what used to be called "Music Therapy" but would be called today "Music Medicine". because the expression "Music Therapy" has now been assigned (by ?) to another developing field, an evidence-based use of music and music tools for non musical objectives.
Evidence, that's what is missing here. Turkey, because of the heritage from the Ottoman culture, continued to use Maqams and the empirically learned principles of the use of Music in healing and Medicine. However, in the rest of the Middle East, the use of Music in medicine did not fo further than that. In addition, because of the late development of Neuroscience, there are no peer reviewed evidence on how different maqams affect the brain and emotions and all old practices are not solidly supported.

Study 2: EEG correlates of Middle Eastern Improvisations on the Ney instrument.
This is the first study of its kind, exploring what is happening in the brain during musical improvisation on the 8 most commonly used Maqams using the Ney instrument, a flute used in the Middle East. The very talented pre-medical student, Mohamad Yaghmour, run and analyzed the investigation under my mentorship, and resulted in the first peer reviewed publication in this field "EEG Correlates of Middle Eastern Music Improvisations on the Ney Instrument".
